7 Sunscreen Myths You Need to Stop Believing

Sunscreen is the single most useful skincare product most dermatologists recommend — and also the one most people skip. A lot of that comes down to myths we've heard for years. Let's sort fact from fiction.

Myth 1: "I have brown skin, so I don't need sunscreen."

Fact: Darker skin has more natural protection from burning, but it's not complete protection. Sun exposure still contributes to dark spots, uneven tone, tanning and early signs of aging. In fact, many people with brown skin use sunscreen specifically to prevent pigmentation and uneven tone.

Myth 2: "It's cloudy or raining, so I can skip it."

Fact: A large share of UV rays pass through clouds. During monsoon in Bangladesh, the sky may be grey, but your skin is still exposed. Make sunscreen a daily habit regardless of the weather.

Myth 3: "I stay indoors, so I'm safe."

Fact: If you sit near a window, travel by rickshaw or CNG, or step out even briefly, you're getting sun exposure. A daily layer of sunscreen covers you for all of it.

Myth 4: "Sunscreen makes my skin oily and breaks me out."

Fact: Older, heavy formulas did. Today there are lightweight gel, fluid and matte sunscreens made for oily and acne-prone skin. If one formula doesn't suit you, try a different texture rather than giving up on sunscreen altogether.

Myth 5: "A higher SPF means I can stay out all day."

Fact: SPF measures protection from burning, but no sunscreen lasts all day. Sweat, oil, and touching your face wear it off. Reapply about every two hours when you're outdoors, and after sweating heavily.

Myth 6: "My makeup has SPF, so that's enough."

Fact: To get the SPF on the label, you'd need to apply far more foundation than anyone actually wears. Use a proper sunscreen underneath your makeup.

Myth 7: "A tiny dab is enough."

Fact: Most people apply too little. A simple guide: use about two finger-lengths of sunscreen for your face and neck.

How to use sunscreen the right way

  1. Choose broad-spectrum protection with SPF 30 or higher

  2. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, after moisturizer and before makeup

  3. Use enough — two finger-lengths for face and neck

  4. Don't forget your ears, neck and the backs of your hands

  5. Reapply every two hours outdoors

Make it a habit

The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear every day. Find a lightweight, comfortable option in the Zovroze collection and make sun protection the easiest part of your routine.
